US online retail giant Amazon has announced plans to open its first major Australian warehouse in suburban Melbourne, which it says will employ hundreds of people. The company — which is feared by many Australian retailers as a major commercial threat — says it will immediately start recruiting staff for the 24,000 square meter warehouse at Dandenong South, in Melbourne's southeast. "This is just the start," Amazon's director of operations for Australia, Robert Bruce, said in a statement. Amazon Marketplace enables third-party retailers to sell their products on the Amazon website. "This new fulfillment center will stock hundreds of thousands of products which will be available for delivery to customers across Australia when we launch our retail offering," Mr. Bruce said.
