Amazon Is Opening A Huge Warehouse In Melbourne

The company — which is feared by many Australian retailers as a major commercial threat — says it will immediately start recruiting staff for the 24,000 square meter warehouse at Dandenong South, in Melbourne's southeast.

"This is just the start," Amazon's director of operations for Australia, Robert Bruce, said in a statement.

Amazon Marketplace enables third-party retailers to sell their products on the Amazon website.

"This new fulfillment center will stock hundreds of thousands of products which will be available for delivery to customers across Australia when we launch our retail offering," Mr. Bruce said.

Amazon is now twice as large as Walmart, which used to be the world's biggest retailer.

The company has declined an interview request and would not say when it expected the warehouse to open.

It is seen by many Australian retailers as a "Death Star".
